Lifesystems Waterproof First Aid Kit

LiFESYSTEMS

Product Review

Ideal for Packrafters, Canoeists, Kayakers as well as general outdoor activities.

Do you carry a first aid kit in the mountains - and do you know how to use it? Its always important to have a first aid kit with you. It’s equally important to ensure that the kit you have meets the needs of you, your adventure environment and that of your medical skill level. Most of us have some form of first aid training but not everyone!

We chose the Lifesystems Waterproof First Aid Kit because it does three things. Firstly, it has the equipment to support basic first aid requirements, secondly, it supports our ever changing adventure environment both on water and land. And thirdly, it gives us an option to be able to customise the kit and still have it all in one protected and waterproof place.

The kit is an ideal option for those that carry the first aid kit for a small group. The waterproof bag has enough space to tailor the kit to suit the potential needs of the small group. You can quite easily take a very good product and turn it into the perfect kit for you with a little customisation. Lifesytems do however have a Mountain Leader Pro First Aid Kit for larger groups if you want to go with a ready made option. But by being smart the waterproof kit allows you to save a little cash. You don't really need to have two different kits to support various group sizes, you just need to customise it a little.

What we really like is the robust waterproof bag the kit comes in. The bag is made from tough, waterproof material, the waterproof first aid kit contains enough equipment for injuries typically sustained from water sports, as well as general outdoor activities. This makes it ideal for when we’re using our packrafts to get to the mountains.

Inside the bag there’s a quick find pouch arrangement that categorises the kit. This helps to keep you organised so that you can administer first aid quickly if required. Lets be honest, our first aid kit gets stuffed away in the bottom of our rucksacks and is very rarely used. The robust bag ensures that when you need the kit inside, its all protected, clean and dry.

The items inside are good quality medical products which will help you treat a number of minor injures. Let’s hope you don't have to use the kit but if you do, then you need to remember to replenish the items you have used. This is often overlooked and only noticed when you need to use it again. Lifesystems provide a Bandage Refill Pack that helps you keep your kit restocked.

What would we add to tailor our first aid kit for the Scottish environment!

To help complete our kit we have added a couple of extras.

Compeed to cover those hot spots before they become an issue. Tick removal tool to tackle those pesky little irritants. Its very important to check each other and deal with ticks early. The long term implications aren't pleasant. An option to rehydrate, recharge your body. It is important to replace the fluids and electrolytes lost as soon as you notice symptoms creeping in, Dioralyte Sachets work well for us. Last but not least, SportShield. This prevents chafing and blisters for 24 Hours and is sweatproof and waterproof. This is good stuff! These extras add very little weight or bulk and fit easily inside the waterproof bag without compromising the waterproof seal.

Is the Lifesystems Waterproof First Aid Kit right for me ?

Well, we’d say that most people with virtually no first aid training will find this kit easy to understand and work with. There’s a handy little guide to help you if that skill fade has crept up on you. It provides you with the equipment you need to take care of most minor mishaps. If however you are the main medical support doctor on a trip up the Amazon then we’d suggest that this kit falls a little short of what that may require. For the everyday adventure seeking person in our Scottish adventure playground, you can’t go far wrong with this kit. Mainly because of its versatility, lightweight and compact design.

OTAT Scotland Top Tip - Find a good, accredited first aid course to attend. One that's tailored to the environment you prefer to adventure in. Obviously our primary adventure play grounds are the mountains. Both Mrs O and I have enrolled on a Glenmore Lodge course for 2019.

Lets wrap this up

A very good product that will be a valuable addition to the kit of any serious user of the outdoors. We’d go as far as to state that not having a first aid kit with you is verging on being irresponsible. The price point of the kit is spot on and wont break the bank. We are sure that the kit will also have a good shelf life, or should we say bottom of the rucksack life. Lifesystems have a number of first aid kits that may well fit your requirement better but as we have already said this Waterproof First Aid Kit is perfectly suited for our adventures.
