Edinburgh Micro Adventure
Edinburgh Micro Adventure
A Friday night out, in the Pentland Hills watching the hectic busy but beautiful city of Edinburgh below.
The weekend was meant to be one for getting things done around the house and to give the mother in law time off from looking after Diggy (our cat). I had also thought it was time to go out and have some wine and a nice meal in town.
Friday afternoon came and the itchy feet started!
Lisa came in from work at around 6pm. I was sat in the garden and she noticed! The bikes were out and the kit was packed. I thought we were going up town, she said!
We didn’t need much for this little Micro-Adventure to the Pentland Hills. I wasn't going to let her down wine, nibbles, bivi and sleeping bags hastily thrown into our rucksacks. Bikes launched onto Hamish and we were off.
Twenty minutes later we arrived at Bonaly carpark, unloaded, kitted up and began to cycle up the hill. Cough, cough..Okay I’ll tell the truth, we cycled about 2 minutes and had to push the rest of the way up the hill. It was all a bit last minute so we weren’t exactly mentally tuned into having a thrashathon up the hill.
We peddled past Bonaly reservoir, through the gate and turned left at the end of the landrover track onto the single track. A blast along this little track until we hit the fork where we took the left, lower option. We then cycled until we hit a faint track that lead us to the city side of Capelaw Hill. There are several flat-ish areas that give a perfect view of the city. Here we set up our bivi site.
We set up, poured some wine and watched the busy city below go about it’s Friday night business. Out of nowhere and in seconds, smoke began to appear from Blackford Hill in the city. We could see the huge flames from our vantage point, miles away! The cynical mind in me instantly jumped to blaming it on the reckless behaviour of others. It could quite possibly have been anything that set it off though.
The sun was gone and darkness began to take hold of the sky. As it got later we began a game spot the blue flashing lights. We lost count quite quickly!
We set the alarm to wake us up at 04:30am, sunrise! I scrambled to find my phone from the depths of my sleeping and switched off the alarm, 04:30am already! As I looked up I shouted, Lisa wake up, it’s here! A muffled grunt and mumble came from her sleeping bag, then a one eyed head wearing a squint hat appeared. We were being treated to an amazing sunrise. To think this happens everyday, how often to we see it though! This time of day brings a clarity to my mind and seeing the sun lift from behind the horizon is an experience for the sole, healthy and beneficial on an spiritual level. Free healing, daily!
